As the evenings get darker consider your home security
As the nights get darker earlier in the UK with the change of seasons, it’s important to take steps to ensure your home remains secure. The longer periods of darkness can indeed increase the risk of burglary, as intruders often prefer to operate under the cover of night.

Here’s what you can do to keep your home and business safe:

Use timers for lights
Setting timers on your indoor and outdoor lights is a simple yet effective way to deter burglars. You can buy very cheap manual timer clocks to plug in or smart plugs to adapt lamps etc and do these by your phone. This creates the appearance that someone is in the house, which can be a significant deterrent. You can even switch on the radio and or TV for a period.

Secure doors and windows
Ensure that all doors and windows are locked before you leave the house or go to bed. UPVC doors should be double locked by lifting the handle and turning the key. Consider upgrading to anti-snap locks if you haven’t already, as these provide extra protection against forced entry. Ask a locksmith if you are not sure.

Install outdoor lighting
Motion-sensor lights around your home can startle potential intruders and alert you to any activity outside. Place them near entrances, driveways, and any darker areas of your property. Add a motion sensor door camera and video for that extra precaution

Consider a security system
If you don’t already have one, consider installing a security system. This could include alarms, CCTV cameras, or smart doorbells that notify you of any unusual activity. Many modern systems allow you to monitor your home from your smartphone.

Keep valuables out of sight
Avoid leaving valuables like electronics, jewellery, or keys near windows where they can be easily seen. Draw curtains or blinds at night to prevent anyone from looking inside, especially when the lights are on.

Be mindful of your routine
Burglars often watch for patterns, so try to vary your routine when possible. If you usually leave for work at the same time every day, consider occasionally leaving earlier or later, and make it look like someone is home during the day. When you can work from home to change patterns.

Join or start a Neighbourhood Watch
Engage with your community by joining or starting a neighbourhood watch group. Having neighbours who look out for each other can be an effective way to prevent crime. Don’t leave pets unattended for long periods.

The darker evenings do increase the risk of burglary. Still, by taking proactive steps like using lighting effectively, securing doors and windows, and installing a security system, you can significantly reduce that risk. Making your home appear occupied and well-protected will make it less attractive to potential intruders.
